Building a more sustainable SFU
Wendy Lee, an architect, is the development manager in SFU’s Facilities Services. As a member of SFU’s Sustainability Advisory Committee since 2006, she has helped to move sustainability from the periphery of university operations to the forefront. Under her direction, SFU created the first greenhouse gas inventory for buildings, fleet and paper, which the university uses to track emissions trends, develop mitigation strategies and communicate with stakeholders.
In 2014, Lee led the first SFU commuter travel survey for all three campuses, in preparation for developing sustainable transportation solutions for the community. She also led SFU’s “Let’s Save Energy Together” campaign, which won a City of Burnaby award for environmental communication in 2014.
Her leadership skills have guided numerous campus sustainability initiatives, including the Green Labs Program, piloting lunchroom composting, using electric bikes as ‘fleet vehicles’, replacing water fountains with water bottle refilling stations and drafting green building guidelines.
She currently serves as a higher-education representative on committees to advance carbon-neutral public-sector initiatives provincially and nationally, and mentors students in SFU’s Change Lab program, which equips students with the skills for creating lasting social change.
