Pacific Water Research Centre

SFU is home to cutting-edge research that examines the path to a more sustainable culture. The Pacific Water Research Centre is one such example, linking researchers, students and community partners to inform innovative solutions to the world’s water issues.

Fostering community-based research

Formally launched in June 2015 by SFU’s faculty of environment, the Pacific Water Research Centre draws on expertise that is both deep and broad, including water science and hydrology, ethics, public policy, integrated water management, and more.

The centre aims to foster an interdisciplinary forum for community-based research and engagement on a range of water-based issues, including:

  • Using local knowledge to inform national and international challenges
  • Coastal-specific research
  • Aboriginal needs and perspectives
  • Community-engaged research and awareness
  • Learning from past relations between human societies and water challenges
  • The role of the social sciences and humanities in water policy
  • Water finance and investments
  • Water science and public policy
  • Research cluster of academic, private industry, Aboriginal and community partners
  • New water management strategies
  • International sustainable development challenges
  • Water and biodiversity conservation
  • Student engagement

“More than simply a theoretical exercise, the centre aims to enable community-centred change on the ground in a pragmatic, tangible way. Our hope is that student internships and coursework will be integrated into research programs that are intimately tied to regional water priorities.”
– Ingrid Leman Stefanovic, professor and dean of SFU’s faculty of environment
