Embark

Creating a sustainable future through student leadership, advocacy and capacity building in the SFU community.

Growing sustainability leaders

Founded in 2003, Embark (then Sustainable SFU) is a student-led not-for-profit society based out of SFU. The organization has 35,000 undergraduate and graduate student members, making it SFU’s largest student society. Through campaigns, training and grants, Embark aims to empower students to lead positive change and become sustainability leaders.

In 2012, the society secured land for a research and learning garden on Burnaby Mountain. They currently operate two gardens at the Burnaby campus, one that is open to members of the campus and Burnaby community, as well as a learning garden that acts as a student-centered learning, social and event space. Other campaigns they are focused on include university divestment, cycling infrastructure and a harvest box program.

A founding member of the Sustainability Advisory Committee, Embark represents SAC’s largest formal connection with students.

Embark offers two grants to help students fund sustainability-related projects and events.
